Why is it that everytime I write about my cat she's either eaten something larger than herself or in the vet for a painful war wound? Despite the fact that the other day I found a half eaten rabbit's leg and a large dead pigeon, this evening before the Wednesday night basic obedience class, her eye was so swollen, she coulden't even open it! There was also some extremely gross stuff coming out of it so after class I took her over to the Longmont Animal Care & Emergency Center. Mitten will be fine- just got hit in the eye probably by an Olw or Hawk she was trying to capture- lol.
Which brings me to my two next points: One is that far too many people don't realize how many dogs are hit by cars daily and two- there are a lot of people out there who can't afford surgeries, etc. when something goes wrong with their pet. It's a very hard job these days being a vet or vet tech. It's even harder giving Emergency Care.
I hope to educate people about the importance of animal safety around cars, etc. Leash laws are in effect for a reason no matter if your dog is trained off leash or not. All it takes is a split second for a rabbit or cat to run by and in an instant, your dogs life can change forever or worse yet- end. Emergency vets & vet hospitals in general are usually forgotten about when it comes to vet care for those who can't afford it. Don't forget to give back even some old towels or blankets that can be used for injured animals to rest peacfully instead of on a cold hard floor.
Karma always comes back to you so those that give will also receive :-)
Goodnight!

Today coming back from the post office, I noticed Mitten had another victim in her death chamber. Mitten is my black & white ruthless street cat that I saved from a trip out the window of a crack addict's car in Los Angeles. I thought it would be fun to train her like my dogs in attack work as a kitten but the plan back fired. She now hunts down species bigger than herself and traps them in what I refer to as her death chamber. You know when you have a basement and there's a window? In order for the light to come through, on the outside of the house where that window is- there's a drop below. I don't know what you call this area as I haven't had a basement in years but it's where all the leaves collect over time. Anyway, today I came home & she had this poor baby bunny in there. The bunny looked scared to death and was jumping into the basement window trying to get away from Mitten. When I saw this, I grabbed my cat totally against her will as she wanted to eat the poor bunny. I ran downstairs and got an old towel and picked little bunny up to release her into the wild blue yonder. When I put bunny on the grass, she actually wanted to stay in the towel so I brought her under a tree and talked to her because she was so scared. The bunny could probably fit in my hand- she was so little. She was so cute with tiny brown eyes that I pet her over her ears and she seemed more calm. She looked in good shape so I put down the towel and she hopped off into the sunset. It was one of those moments that just puts things into perspective.
For the rest of the afternoon, Mitten was banned to the house to make sure bunny got away but she wasn't happy. She not only kills these animals but she eats them too! I don't mind mice because there are too many around but bunnies and birds are protected under the McCarthy Wilderness Act that's zoned around my property. So Mitten- You better watch out! :-)

I own a cat that thinks she's a dog. First of all, I taught her how to sit- big mistake. She throws a fit if she can't go on walks with the dogs and she tries to eat their food in which they growl at her (which she could care less about). She drinks out of the big water bowls, goes to the bathroom outside when I take the dogs out and she has no fear of other dogs what so ever. Today, Mitten decided it would be fun to first chase a mouse through a dog training class I was holding and then torture a Golden Retriever by running up behind him, batting his tail and running off over and over again. If my dogs aren't star performers for clients that's one thing but my next challenge is training my cat. Maybe she can be the roady. I don't know- everytime she shows up at a party, she's always got to bring the cat nip. lol
I don't even know how I ended up with a cat in the first place- oh yea, she was thrown out of a car by a crack-addict in L.A. Luckily I was there, brought her to my vet and saved her life. After nursing her back to health, I coulden't exactly give her away- I got attached. So there you have it... Three German Shepherd protection dogs and a cat named Mitten The Kitten who's black with two white socks.
