Day One - Mission: Wolf

09.18.06 - 10:00 PM - 39 degrees

Well, here I am at Mission: Wolf in the middle of nowhere, Colorado and when I say nowhere, I mean a very remote location. I arrived a little late tonight just as the refuge was closing. I was greeted by two volunteers who seem to have been working here a while. I didn't have much time until sunset so I got right to setting up my gear...

I did see two adolescent wolves as I walked in to my left. They were in an enclosure close where people come into the camp so that they can become better acclimated to humans. One of the volunteers told me that in order for the wolves to receive medical attention, they must get used to humans in close proximity to them. A wolf's natural instinct is to run out of fear. One of the wolves was a dark greyish-black and the other one looked close to white. After observing these two little guys for a bit, I got right to setting up my tent. If I must say so myself, it looks pretty good and will provide a nice shelter for me while I'm here.

The tempature right now is 39 degrees. It's pretty cold to say the least. I should have brought some warmer socks... oh well, next time.

After setting up my tent, I was starving so I had an egg salad on falafel and a banana with peanut butter. Not very exciting, but my hands were freezing and I couldn't imagine trying to work my stove. As I write this, I have on a t-shirt, Patagonia jacket, North Face jacket, jeans, two pairs of socks and I'm laying in my sleeping bag with a blanket on top of me - and I'm still cold! Coming from South Florida to this is a huge change. I better prepare myself for Winter here. Tomorrow I'll set up my tent heater because it's going to be cold! I'm glad I wasn't here last night when it was 28 degrees! BRR...

So now the journey begins from dogs to wolves. I hope this will keep you infomed, enlightened and well educated when it comes to your dog.

Wolf Howls: 10:49 PM

As I lay in my tent, the wolves howl in many different locations. The howls are synchronized and the sound is like a song. It's quite powerful and majestic at the same time. One wolf will start and the rest will follow... I couldn't imagine a better place to be right now.

Wishing you all the best, Jennifer
